Agreed, Corey; like a train wreck in slow motion. With how much it’s jumped around so far without a ton of purpose, I think I’d probably dislike this movie if I was to watch it at the moment.
Maybe the catwalk was where the armored transport was carried by the ship? It definitely doesn’t look like a great ship to spend any long periods of time on, so an exterior expansion sort of makes sense. If this thing actually gets shown in space as is, I think I’d just have to call it designed by Rule of (mostly) Cool and leave it at that.
Familiarity breeds contempt, or something like that, Ben. Anyway, an actually good first impression can help quite a bit and take some time to overcome. Who knows how long Chewie had been stuck in that pit after all.

Corey: This backstory... it’s... like watching a train wreck.
Jim: Oh, we haven’t got to the train wreck yet!
Jim: We flew low over the majestic snow-capped peaks of Bothawui.
Jim: I was enjoying the view on the exposed catwalk.
GM: Why does a spaceship have an exposed catwalk?
Jim: So you can enjoy the view. Chewie joined me.
Chi’ra: Thanks for helping me out of that dungeon.
Chewbacca: Thank you for your shrewd escape plan, that I had not considered myself.
Chewbacca: You know, I don’t think Chewbacca has this much respect for Han.
Jim: Oh, he did back then!
