Episode 2360: Certain Rules That One Must Abide By

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

The universe doesn't care. Adventurers and heroes must make headway against an implacable reality that doesn't care about their bold exploits or their quests for justice and righteousness. The forces of good should triumph, but there are no rules that say this is guaranteed, and you have to fight against chaos and entropy the whole way.

The ultimate expression of this in a roleplaying game is probably Call of Cthulhu. Humans just ultimately don't matter and the universe will do whatever it wants, and if millions of humans die horribly, well, that doesn't mean anything.

Except to us humans, it does. We struggle against the darkness. We fight to hang on to precarious existence. We choose to do this and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

Get out there and kick some monster butt.

Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)

Ooooooo. Those are some pretty good lines from Corey. I'm getting some "grind and sieve the universe for one atom of justice" vibes from that. Feels like they could almost be from the movie as well, though I'm on the fence as to whether Disney would allow the writing to be that nuanced. Villain/Evil/Dark Side things are generally pretty obvious, so saying that you can feel it in yourself could be something the company would shy away from for marketing purposes.

As for fear and scary movies, I think that's only a problem if you get angry afterwards. Which makes me wonder if someone could get on the "Path to the Balance Side" by figuring out the 14 steps for both Light and Dark and then alternating between the two. Fear leads to Calm leads to Passion leads to Tolerance and so on. It'd be very important then to first start with the Dark Side path if you want to avoid Suffering!

Luke: But this balance means bad things happen. The universe doesn’t care.
Luke: We can be better than that. We have the ability to do good and prevent evil.
Luke: If we can sense the Dark Side, we can fight it.
Luke: Sometimes you feel it within yourself. That’s when you need to be strongest.
Luke: Fear is the path to the Dark Side.
GM: Suddenly Rey feels a chill run down her spine. {image of a dark, wet rock shelf next to the roiling sea}
Rey: Does this mean I’m not allowed to like scary movies?
