Episode 2287: Psst! Codes from the Bridge

Metaphors can be great ways to communicate flavourful information. They can also be great ways to be misunderstood.

For example, when a dwarf says something is "solid as a rock", they actually mean it's quite fragile, because they have great skill in cutting and working stone, but sometimes the rocks shatter under a careless hammer and chisel.

When a goblin says something is "as quick as a snake", they actually mean it's pretty slow, because goblins habitually catch snakes for food and have great skill at grabbing them before they can slither away.

When an elf says, "my heart droops like a willow", they actually mean they appreciate something, because to elves willows are accommodating and flexible, moving to the rhythms of nature in an appreciative way rather than resisting.

Examine your campaign and think of some unique metaphors that non-humans might end up using, and see if you can confuse any humans with them!

Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)

Hm, so there is actually a little transmitter thing used in the movie. Maybe. It could just be a pair of trinkets that glow and look extremely similar and are held in almost the same way.... Ok, they've basically gotta be communicators of some kind. Encrypted voicemail seems unlikely though, so I guess that would leave a super special long-range phone equivalent as a pair of tiny holo-projectors would be a little much for Star Wars. Even if hand-sized ones already existed decades ago. I hope they show up again later and aren't just a one-time key appearance.

That said, we might have also had a small time skip between the sushi fishing and here. The bad weather looks to have blown away and the sun's out again. Or perhaps this is just a better portrait view of Rey from an upcoming scene later. I could see that comic choice being made. Even if Luke and Rey are still in the storm during the latest Resistance attack, more panels from that scene would make it difficult to tell who's talking. Also, it might just be the way the light is directed on the scene here, but it looks like the hand panel and the last panel are in different locations. Even with the blur, it doesn't look like the shadows are going off to the left of the panel. And there's not nearly as much greenry in the last panel as well, though that detail could just be camera angle.

Kylo Ren: Did I find the Japor snippet in Vader’s helmet?
GM: You didn’t have a lot of time, but no.
Kylo Ren: So I’m not invulnerable. I better be a little careful.
GM: Before we launch into a big space battle:
GM: Rey, you get a message on your decoder bracelet.
Rey: What’s it say?
Leia: Rey, we’re heading to Crait, but the First Order has intercepted us in deep space. Take care, see you at Crait. Hopefully. Drink your milk.
Rey: I’m not sure this is such a good idea. How good is encryption in this setting?
GM: Oh, it’s very secure. You can totally trust it. It’s as safe as a bank.
Rey: Yikes! I maintain radio silence.
