Episode 2088: The Earnestness of Being Important

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

A classic piece of GMing is to describe a room in exquisite detail, taking several sentences to enumerate all of the various furnishings, the tapestries hanging on the walls, the architectural style, the materials used, the knick-knacks present on the various pieces of furniture, the state of cleanliness or otherwise, the smells and aromas present...

And then end by saying that standing in the middle of the room are a dozen angry looking orcs.

If you've never had the pleasure of doing this (and seeing your players' reactions), try it sometime.

The GM could have also ignored the action to finish their sentence to make a point that it's a good idea not to interrupt and to get all the information (even the flavor) before trying things. And on Pete's side, getting all the information first gives better wiggle room to argue for advantages like Rey being able to react to surprise attacks.

I'd thought this could be the same room that Poe had been stuck in, but after another look, this one is much too bright and the wall decorations are different. It's a good callback though, or at least it sets the scene nicely for one. I wonder if this is also on the Finalizer; that would make for a pretty good end-of-movie explosion during the attempted rescue.

That helmet is really not flattering from the side. Kylo should keep the hood up, or at least finish the paint job on the back and top. It's kind of skull-like which is kind of neat, but I can really only see that when looking sideways at it. Zooming in to look at it closer, the detailing on the face mask also looks much more swiss-cheesed and damaged from the side.

Transcript

GM: Since Pete’s here now, let’s switch and do a scene with Rey.
GM: Rey wakes up, restrained on an inclined rack.
Rey: I look around.
GM: You’re in a dimly lit chamber with black walls and distressed industrial styling—
Rey: I test my bonds.
GM: Uh... they’re pretty solid. Staring at you is the masked figure who captured you in the forest.
Rey: You should have said that earlier!
GM: I was setting the scene.
Rey: You could start with the most important detail.
Kylo Ren: I appreciate your flattery, but it will get you nowhere.
