Some people are all too keen to try using a cool new weapon or piece of equipment that they've just found. In some cases, you can only really work out what it does if you try to use it. This is often the case for magical items in fantasy games, but it can also apply to technological items in genres such as post-apocalypse or simply when the user has no experience with the gadgets in question.
This is the most immediate and direct way to try and find out what something does. It's also the most dangerous.
But that's what makes it fun, isn't it?

*Grumble grumble* Here goes someone forgettin' about BB-8 again... Robots get no respect in Star Wars ah tells ye' what. *grumble grumble*
Using a laser sword without the Force? Bad idea as we know from Kyle. Using a laser sword, that's glowing bright blue, in the middle of a combat zone without the Force? Worse idea. About the only thing Finn could do to top that would be to start juggling it for more attention while saying "what's the worst that could happen?". At least, I don't think Finn has shown any signs of being Force sensitive yet... That'd be a neat plot twist.
Hmmm, this would be a reasonable point for Finn to get rid of Kanata if he's going to still work for the First Order. A former Jedi that could have trained Rey Solo now dead? That might be enough to keep Finn alive if he runs into Kylo, which seems much more likely now. And Chewbacca and Han Solo conveniently just left these two behind, providing a handy "he got shot and I had to leave him behind" excuse for why Finn is suddenly alone.

GM: Finn, Kanata, you emerge behind Yanni and Chewie. The bar is completely flattened.
[SFX]: Pow!
Darth Kanata: Wow. This party’s over.
Finn: I scan the area for Rey and BB-8.
[SFX]: Pow!
GM: There’s no sign of them. Troopers swarm over the debris, shooting stragglers.
Finn: We need to get to the Falcon and get out of here!
Darth Kanata: What about your friends?
Finn: Rey can look after herself. This sword, how do I use it?
Darth Kanata: Be really careful. You don’t want to end up like Kyle Katarn. You need some training.
[SFX]: Whooom!! {Finn turns on the sword}
Darth Kanata: Yeah, that’s a bad start.
