Not the kind of sensor tripping I’d suspected we’d see, but this is actually a pretty good joke by Jim.
I’m actually a little surprised that it took this long for the guard post (droid post?) to respond to the train attack. I’m more surprised that there are actually guard-bots responding at all. The majority of the droids seen after the Trade Federation died are the smaller repair or translation type, but even the one in Episode V that looks like these was mentioned as an Imperial Probe droid.
Shooting all of them sounds like a much better idea than just one. Unless Val’s blaster is too weak to single shot them. Then focusing one droid down at a time would be a much better idea. Firing wildly and trying to get them all would make for an okay distraction, but could be just as likely to split the guard-bot group up and have half of them continue towards the train while the other half takes out Val first.

Jim: The hauler smashed through a sensor pylon.
[SFX]: crunch...
[SFX]: scrape...
Beckett: Val! Keep your eyes open! We just tripped a sensor.
Jim: Val paused in laying charges to check on the guard post.
Val: Viper droids headed your way!
Beckett: Yeah, that ain’t good. The whole plan is a mess.
Val: I’ll shoot one to distract them!
[SFX]: Pow! Boom!
Beckett: Or, you know, shoot all of them.
Val: That’d mess up our mess real quick, wouldn’t it? This ain’t like dusting crops, boy!
