Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)
An advance party would make sense if there’s reconnaissance needed. Or stealth. Or a distraction. Plenty of reasons to have an advance party.
Jim’s really giving his character airs here. I give it 4 to 5 comics before everything goes sideways and most of the squad is dead.

Jim: Corey, you can be Lieutenant Bolandin.
Lieutenant Bolandin: Attention! In three hours, we move out for the southern marshlands.
Lieutenant Bolandin: I want an advance party of ten men.
Chi’ra: Wait, sir. Why have an advance party?
Lieutenant Bolandin: To, you know, advance. Like armies do.
Chi’ra: Ten men isn’t going to do much. Take everyone!
Lieutenant Bolandin: Corporal Chi’ra...
Lieutenant Bolandin: ... that’s brilliant military tactics that would also be applicable to rogue mercenary groups and certain other situations. You’ve really proven yourself.
Chi’ra: Awesome!
