Backstory 31: Walkers, Cheese, and Off-the-Script

Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)

Ah good, I’m not the only one that wondered about picking up a used transport. I suppose another reason to steal one without a walker would be that no one's going to expect a transport that’s leaving to actually have been stolen and head somewhere else instead.

Beckett definitely feels like Pete if this is even close to the movie. Given the circumstances though, this is probably more likely a “war is hell” or “pull back to a location” sort of thing. Suddenly turning into a heist of some kind this fast would be a neck-snappingly bad plot twist.

Rio: Wait. If we wanted a military transport carrier, why did we come into a combat zone to get it?
Rio: We could have got one at the rear supply depot away from the front lines.
Jim: That’s not on the script, but fortunately I thought of that and wrote an explanation. Here, Pete:
Beckett: It’s obvious when you think about it, Rio, as a thorough planning person like me would.
Beckett: If we stole it from the supply depot, it’d be carrying an armoured walker. We need to steal it after it’s delivered that to the front lines.
Rio: But... we could just ditch the walker. Or sell it, even.
Beckett: Now, Rio, it’s easier to steal stuff when people are being distracted by being shot and dying all over the place. There’s no risk of significant characters like me and you and Val here dying.
Jim: That’s good! I’ll add that in. <scribble>
Beckett: I’m beginning to like this Beckett guy.
