NPCs can be memorable as individuals, but there's plenty to be gained by having them appear in duos. Just think of all the cool characters in fiction who always appear associated with one another. Holmes and Watson. Batman and Robin. Kirk and Spock. Timon and Pumbaa. Laurel and Hardy. Asterix and Obelix.
These distinctive duos also give you a handle on how to characterise the NPCs, allowing you to roleplay them more easily by imagining what each of the pair would do in specific circumstances. This is a trick that also works well for individual NPCs, but reaches a whole new level with duos, or even trios or larger groups.

Oh no, we've got a mystery to solve here. The mystery of how Jim managed to understand not-Scoob so easily! I even had to try and say that out loud four times before I figured it out.
Anyway, it wasn't described, but I think we've lost.... four shuttles now? That looks like almost half the shuttle fleet if I count correctly. Really hope that recruitment drive Wexley is trying pans out for the Resistance. Otherwise there's only going to be this shuttle left for that last stand on Crait at this rate.

Poe: We can’t shoot back? We’re sitting ducks!
Caluan Ematt: The Black Alpha camo I put on this shuttle is keeping us safe.
Poe: I race to the cockpit.
Poe: What are you pilots doing?
Pammich Nerro Goode: Like, trying to stay out of the blast zone, man!
Poe: Turn us around!
Cova Nell: Ruh-roh! Round? Right into the rays?
Poe: We’re gonna get some of the sweet ramming action!
[SFX]: Kaboom!
Pammic Nerro Goode: Zoinks! We’ll all, like, be splattered! Against that flagship we’ll be, like, like flies!
Poe: Maybe, but—
Cova Nell: It ron’t even re rhectacular!
Poe: Oh. Awww.
