Episode 2434: Rash Omen

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

Background stories and lore are often used to set up adventurous situations in games. Knowing something about the history of the setting and the people in it can be valuable information that helps you to navigate a complex web of motivations and actions.

But there's nothing that says any of that background knowledge necessarily has to be true. Different people will have different perspectives. History is written by the winners. Stories get miscommunicated, tangled, corrupted.

The legend of Sir Warrick killing the great Grey Wyrm a century ago says that the Wyrm was defeated by being captivated by its own reflection in Warrick's shield. A new Grey Wyrm now terrorises the land. Perhaps a canny group of heroes will spend time getting highly polished shields... to no good purpose.

Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)

Kylo versus Luke: take three.

I'm not sure that this is entirely correct from the perspective of the movie with this addition even still. Luke doesn't look like he's acting as if he knows Kylo will attack in panel 3 there. More like trying to quietly pinch or squash something. For a mind-reading pose, I would have expected the fingers to be more evenly spread apart instead of the lift-a-ship. Or possibly curling the ring and little fingers a bit. But maybe I just haven't looked that closely before and this is always how Luke holds his hand when Force using?

Mind-reading does make the most sense in spite of that however. Luke seems to get really unhappy in his next panel, and a mental intrusion does feel more likely to wake someone than a lightsaber sound. Kylo also has time to pull his own lightsaber and block Luke's swing, which likely wouldn't happen against a Jedi properly using their own abilities to kill. And assuming he did awake to the sound, immediately waking, seeing Luke, and blocking the strike would mean Kylo either has superspeed or he sleeps holding his own lightsaber. Neither of those seem likely at all even for Kylo.

Oh and "Knowledge and Defence"? Pete's either going to break that idea by continuing to try for the Dark Side or by figuring out that there's a loophole that allows for attacking without the Force. I hope it's the second one; that sounds like something Pete can't resist even more than getting power in a straightforward manner.

Rey: Drop the “defence only” schtick. Kylo says you tried to kill him.
[SFX]: whmmm... {Rey holds her sword over Luke}
Luke: Well, I mean, from his point of view, maybe.
Luke: {narrating flashback} I sensed he was going to attack me and actually drew my sword.
Luke: But a Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defence, never for attack.
[SFX]: whmmm...
Luke: He hadn’t absorbed that lesson. He saw me, and assumed the worst.
[SFX]: whooom!
[SFX]: kzzrzkzk!
[SFX]: kzzrzkzk!
Luke: He pulled his sword and attacked with fury, destroying my Academy.
[SFX]: force shove!
Rey: Well. I’m clearly never going to get a straight narrative of this.
