Episode 2297: It’s a Long Way to the Ships if You Want a Saviour Role

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

Reputation is the one thing that can survive a character's death*. So it's a good thing to establish before any potential death scene.

* Unless you're playing a game where there can be ghosts. Or vampires. Or other undead. Or spirits from the Other Side. Or doppelgängers. Or changelings. Or clones. Or AI simulations of a character. Okay, so maybe reputation isn't everything after all.

Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)

Wow, this isn't just a spur of the moment thing either. Six months is real dedication to learning a new skill. And judging by the expression used, I think Pete is actually trying to impress someone. Or maybe he's just somewhat annoyed by the backhanded compliment.

Anyway, it makes sense that Tallie would already be in a fighter. Most of the fighter pilots wouldn't be hanging around the bridge so soon after the most recent fight/bombing run. Or, well, bomber throw away. That still looked like a really bad space battle on a quick reread, so I'm hoping it flowed a lot better as a movie scene than the picture I've got looking through the comic lens.

"Being a hero after you've sacrificed yourself": I think maybe this is post-justification for Pete as Paige. Otherwise Jim would have had much more success at convincing people he's brilliant. And I'm not sure the other players could handle much more of that kind of brilliance. As a result, I'm betting that Tallie's going to survive this fight as well. She's had a bit too much screentime to just get blown up without fanfare I think, and Ben doesn't seem the type to try and be the hero like Pete's making Paige out to be.

Transcript

Finn: ... So you’ve been secretly taking lessons for six months? If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were trying to impress someone.
GM: Are we ready? Kylo is leading an attack on the Raddus. Allan and BB-8 are racing to the hangar.
BB-8: We’ve been running to the hangar for over a week.
GM: It’s a long way from the bridge.
Tallie: Tallie would be in a fighter, ready to launch, right?
GM: Yes, Ben.
Rey: If only Paige were still alive, she’d be able to save everyone again.
Tallie: I wouldn’t be so sure. This is going to be a tough battle.
Rey: It’s easier being a hero after you’ve sacrificed yourself. Everyone can just assume you’d be brilliant again.
Tallie: Is that why you did it?
Rey: I’m always thinking of the future.
