Episode 2095: The Ghost of Campaigns Past

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

Fictional cultures are going to have their own special holidays and festivals, just like real world cultures. You can give your campaign world an authentic flavour by including some.

The easy way is to make analogues of real world holidays. Just file the serial numbers off, give it a new name but many of the same traditions, and Bob's your uncle.

With a bit more work you can invent your own festivals out of whole cloth, drawing inspiration from the wide world of strange traditions. If you need some extra inspiration, we have a random village/festival generator that you can tap for ideas.

Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)

Wait, Artoo's actually here? I thought his cameo appearance for the movie was already done in the visions thing and that Sally was making game things up like the Unlife Day bit. Artoo would have had to either be off screen all the time (rather unlikely now that I think about it more), or the comic would have had Artoo's mind transplanted into BB-8/some generic droid body and the party would have needed to get that fixed as well like a "Search for Spock" plot. So why the heck is he here instead of with Luke? Visionquest stuff aside, I was thinking that since R2-D2 wasn't following C-3PO out of the dropship in the movie, he had to still be with Luke. In the original trilogy and discounting the Jawa attack, was Artoo ever separated long enough to make an appearance without one of those two?

Though really, being under a tarp is only marginally more weird, especially since you can see Artoo leaning slightly forward in the first panel, then straightening up once the tarp is removed. Was Artoo stuck shuffling forward before BB-8 came up? That seems a little too mean a trick to pull on a droid for Star Wars, especially for one of the two former big robot buddies, but I can't think what else it could be at the moment.

And wow, it never really crossed my mind that BB-8 was a lot smaller than R2-D2. I'd thought at least the head dome portion was the same size, but that's obviously not the case. I wonder if the new X-wing design actually has room for R2 units now. The ball body BB uses looks to be the same size as the cylinder body of Artoo, so is there still room for the legs?

Transcript

GM: Back at the Resistance base on D’Qar, BB-8 is wandering around when he hears an eerie voice.
R2-D2: {under a sheet} Wooo-ooo! I’m the Moo-oon Ghost!
BB-8: Uh...
GM: You see an ominous amorphous shape looming in the gloom.
BB-8: It’s not really a ghost, is it?
GM: Your sensors indicate it’s a sheet draped over something.
BB-8: I pull the sheet off.
[SFX]: fwip!
R2-D2: Hey! That was my costume!
BB-8: Costume?
R2-D2: For Unlife Day. I’m dressing up as the Moon Ghost.
BB-8: Why are your running lights all off?
R2-D2: Because I’m dead, duh.
