Episode 2077: Plot, Stock, and Two Floating Barrels

Ideally, plot threads should come together like a finely crafted piece of weaving by a skilled artisan.

Usually, though, they end up looking like a cross between old spider webs, masses of network cables, and a relationship diagram of a long-running soap opera.

This has its advantages though. If you pull a plot thread, you don't want to the whole thing to unravel. You want it to tighten up into an intractable Gordian knot.

Stronghold? Like the Peace Moon perhaps? A desperate attack on the Moon as a rescue mission, maybe with a side of blowing it up; that'd be a good way to end the movie I think. Or maybe Rey will end up in the same chair as Poe on the Finalizer and that ship will get blown up as part of the end to the movie instead. That'd let the movie makers reuse the same assets, plus make for some nice parallels/contrasts to Poe's situation where he had to get a "rescue" from the inside to leave instead of a Resistance strike force or something.

Capturing named cannons and using them? That sounds like an excellent thing to let players get away with. For a while. Not having seen any Voltron episodes, I can think of at least a half a dozen things that a GM could throw at the players after letting them have some fun with the cannons. Free agency doesn't mean free from consequences after all, including entropy! Maintenance costs on large weapons could be quite exorbitant after all.....

Transcript

Leia: We should get going after Rey.
Finn: No! I mean...
Finn: They’ll have gone to lightspeed by now. Wherever they’re taking her will be a First Order stronghold.
Leia: Mmm, true.
Leia: Let’s return to base and take stock.
GM: And that seems like a good place to wrap up for tonight and let me take stock of where we are in the adventure.
Chewbacca: You mean throwing out all your plans and starting from scratch?
GM: Surprisingly, no. There are some plot threads that could come together in the next session.
BB-8: I had to throw out most of my plans in my mecha game.
Chewbacca: Letting us capture and use the Zaiforge cannons was a big turning point.
BB-8: I didn’t want to restrict what you were doing in any way. See how the game went if you had complete free agency.
GM: And now you know better.
C-3PO: That explosion was awesome!
