The rescue mission is a classic adventure template. The heroes need to make a plan to get past enemies and save captives. You can run this with NPCs as the captives, but you can also adapt the plot for use if a group of heroes split up and half of them get captured.
Which makes it a very useful plot archetype to have in your arsenal.

Huh! I wouldn't have figured Rey as being a possible droid-hater. BB-8's got more to contribute than just a shock probe; that flame torch looked pretty small, but it'd be a nasty close-range weapon all the same, for example. And it's not Rey that thought up the plan here I'll also note, electronic brains are just as good as meat ones! (at least for PC characters)
And really, the GM should have known better about the group splitting up again. It's difficult to push groups together when there's something between them, and here the GM set up a nice barrier in the form of dozens of troopers, PIE fighters, and a collapsed roof/floor for good measure. There's no reason for the good-side group to try and rush together with all that in the way. And unless there's a blaster-proof version, I don't think a measly flaming cloak is going to scare off trained troopers in this universe. Exaggerated counter-attack? Quite possibly the best option unless the Resistance has speed-dialed some forces to join in that have yet to arrive.

GM: Finn, Yanni, Chewie, you’re stuck in the basement. The floor above has collapsed into rubble.
Finn: Can we dig our way out?
GM: It’ll take some time.
GM: Rey, BB-8, a trooper is chasing you through the forest.
Rey: 13!
[SFX]: Pow!
Rey: Okay, BB-8. This is a tough situation. We need to save our friends. Our assets are my brains, this blaster, and your shock probe.
BB-8: We need to exaggerate our numbers. Attack on multiple fronts.
Rey: A pincer movement. I don’t like splitting up, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
{beat, they head off in opposite directions}
GM: <sob> It’s not that desperate...
Rey: {sotto voce} What I wouldn't give for a holocaust cloak...
