Episode 1425: The Terrible Old Man

People often don't think beyond their immediate goals, to what they would do after.

This is seldom a problem for characters in a game, however. What you do with treasure and powerful items is use them to get more treasure and more powerful items. Obviously.

Transcript

GM: Luke, you see a battle in space outside the window of Palpatine's chamber.
Luke: So it begins.
Palpatine: The end is near.
Palpatine: I hear a noise in my mind, as of some immense slippery force lumbering against it; it shall not find me. God, that hand! The window! The window!
Luke: Let me ask you a question. Who are you doing all of this for?
Palpatine: For the people!
Luke: What about those people out there? You have a rebellion on thousands of worlds. The people are suffering.
Palpatine: Life is a hideous thing; and from the background behind what we know of it peer daemoniacal hints of truth which make it sometimes a thousandfold more hideous.
Luke: But you're in a position to help! Rein in the military, reinstate the Senate, and give control back to the people.
Luke: {to Vader} Isn't that what you'd do, mother, if you had control? Over everything?
Darth Vader: I... I've honestly never thought about it.
Palpatine: Because you've never thought of overthrowing me; or never thought past overthrowing me?
