Episode 2426: The Mirror Click’d From Side to Side

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

This scene is a good example of a sort of trick or puzzle that could be used in a roleplaying game. Notice how the GM doesn't say exactly what's going on, but provides hints that the player can interpret and figure out. This gives the players a chance to be clever and to feel clever.

Of course there's always a chance that clues like this go unnoticed or misinterpreted, and the players leap to all sorts of wacky conclusions. But that's fine too! Just nod sagely and tell them how clever they are for working it out.

Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)

Oooooo, a really freaky crystal mirror. Good thing there was only the one mirror; getting caught standing between two is how you can really get in trouble. None of the other Reys appear to have picked up a purple palette either, so there's no need to immediately start running as well. This is definitely more interesting than Episode V's thing now. Maybe I just really like fractals or tessellations, but this also seems like a really good brain-bending scene for the movie. I can just imagine the clicking sound traveling from left speaker to right with a dramatic camera pan too.

Now, if I was in Pete/Rey's position here, I think I would try walking backwards. Would I run into one of the first four copies? Hit the surface of the crystal and stop? Accidentally fall back into the water? Any one of those things could have really weird implications for how this mirror anomaly works.

GM: What hand did you reach out with?
Rey: Uh... my right.
GM: Your left arm is up. You see the backs of four copies of yourself, then one reflected version looking at you.
Rey: Huh. I’m inside the mirror.
Rey: I turn around.
GM: More images of you recede into infinity.
Rey: It’s a poor sort of mirror that only works backwards...
GM: There’s a slight delay between your motions.
Rey: I click my fingers to test the delay.
GM: The images click in a wave like this:
[SFX]: clik clik clik clik clik clik
[SFX]: clik clik clik clik clik clik
Rey: Hmm. Slower than the speed of sound. Something in here is particularly dense.
GM: No comment.
