When you need to distract players from out-of-character conversations, introduce something dramatic into the game. Basically Raymond Chandler's advice of "When in doubt, have a man come through the door with a gun in his hand." Only modified to fit the genre, and to be even more dramatic if possible.
You don't want to slap them out of the game fiction, you want to slap them back into it.

Well, that's one way to split them up I suppose. It's not completely out of the blue either, though I can't tell where that chasm that opened up behind Rey a few comics ago would be. Maybe this is part of the same chasm, the duo moved along in the fight, and now it's just falling apart more? Game-wise the GM obviously felt like this should be the end of combat, but asking for saving throws to not fall in the giant pit would work quite well to disguise that feeling better. Thankfully, Annie came in with a perfect distraction.
Pete is really hung up on the "don't betray fellow PCs" part of roleplaying, isn't he? Also, an important item near Finn? The gun that Rey dropped. It wouldn't be a part of the movie of course, but that would also be an excellent reason to go back so shooting Kylo could be an option. Force Jumping could be countered with a Force Push, though Kylo seemed to refuse to do that once the lasersword fights began. Maybe there's something against that in the comic? I remember Anakin and Obi-Wan having a stalemate Force Push moment in Episode III, but after quick checking that part of the comic, it seems to have not been included.
