Episode 1817: A New Ball Game

Lor San Tekka is played in the film by Max von Sydow, who alas passed away recently, on 8 March. He had a long and illustrious acting career, and we like to think he might have found our reinterpretation of this movie amusing.

Thank you, Max.

Corey is running BB-8? Really? Ok, so Luke is missing, and Corey needs someone to play. Clearly, Pete's "Awesomeness!" has rubbed off, and we have another robot. So we are going to have both Artoo and Bitty Ball. And why then is Pete's droid referred to as Artoo, and not R2, if Corey's is referred to as BB instead of Beebee?

OK. Jim, a.k.a. character death, is playing Poe Dameron.

"Poe"?

Will he be hunted by a black bird?
Will he wind up inside a brick wall?
How will he die this time?

(Ok, technically, Padmé did not die while Jim was playing her. Rumors of her death were premature.)

Ben, playing Old Ben Kenobi, Obi-Wan, Chewbacca, and now Old Lor San Tekka.

Ok. Poe and Lor San are talking. Ben, thoughtful, thinking player that he is, is providing the GM's intro of his background. And he and Luke were together on the planet of Ahch-To (gesundheit). Jim, naturally, is concerned with how much loot the treasure is worth, unable to understand the concept of museum-style treasure.

Although, now that I think about it, the Indiana Jones movies made it clear that museum treasure has value. Jim would probably make a great Indy.

On the screencaps: That second picture, the building on the far right: What kind of fire do they have burning in there? The idea of a small intake, with a big fire inside, might make sense for some forges, but they must have a higher tech level than that, right?

Wow. 30 years later, that'd definitely explain why everyone from the original trilogy is old now. I think that fits pretty well with the previous character age changes. Given that I'm thinking specifically of Obi-Wan's aging between 3 and 4, I think it fits pretty well. Episode IV has the group encounter an aged Jedi who was much younger in 3, now we've got that as the premise with 7 looking for Luke from 6!

Corey's playing BB-8? I'd always thought that Pete would be playing him as the droid looks like a lot more mobile Artoo. I wonder if this means BB-Corey will be a lot more helpful with non-hacking things than R2-Pete was (Pete-as-GM changes being ignored for the moment).

Ben's playing another old character; not a huge surprise there. I think I'd probably play older characters too if it meant a small boost to the Wisdom or Intelligence equivalent stats. Star Wars always struck me as needing less Strength for things anyway.

And of course, Jim hasn't changed a bit but the look of it. I hope he put the same effort in building Poe as he did Han. Han Solo had some great faces for screen-capping and scenes in Episodes IV-VI. Luke had the cool lightsaber and force powers, but he lacked the daring rogue personality and snarky comments that Han did.

Transcript

GM: So, you’ve all created new characters with me. It’s 30 years after Palpatine’s death. The ace pilot assigned to find Luke is Poe Dameron, played by Jim.
GM: Corey is his astromech droid, BB-8. They’re meeting with Lor San Tekka, an old Rebel agent, played by Ben. Sally, Pete, and Annie are not in this village.
GM: BB-8, scanning the night sky outside, you see drop ships approaching.
BB-8: That can’t be good. I run to warn Poe.
GM: You roll across the sand to the tent where Poe and Lor are talking.
Sally: Ha ha! Like a ball!
BB-8: Yeah, you know what, exactly like a ball. I’m a droid shaped like a ball.
Sally: Oh. Cool.
{inside a tent}
Lor: Yes, I knew Luke. We found the lost world of Ahch-To, where the ancient Jedi texts are stored.
Poe: Awesome! Any cool treasure?
Lor: The Jedi texts... are a kind of treasure.
Poe: What do you think we can get for them?
Lor: I... don’t have them. Luke has them. We need to find Luke.
Poe: Right.
Poe: Do you think he’ll notice us taking them?
