If players can invent "suddenly remembered" details of the backstory for their PCs, then so can the GM.
If the GM can invent "suddenly remembered" details of the backstory for someone's PC, then so can the player.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander. (And vice versa... you get it.)

You know, this flashback feels a little forced/railroad-like. Last strip the GM basically said "you look at this thing, it reminds you of stuff, here is everything that is racing through your mind right now. Story time!"
Granted, Jim needs a bit of a railroad every once and a while, and this is helping him with the whole backstory thing. So I'll roll with it.

Last-minute retroactive change to your backstory. I love the idea of:
PC: She died.
GM: She died? Okay fine the big bad killed your mother.
PC: Great, now I have a reason to do all the things I've been doing up until now.
I didn't realize just how significant Milo's backstory alterations would be foreshadowing this comic. (He plays with his backstory multiple times over the course of Harry Potter and the Natural 20, mentioned last comic.)
Still, in panel five (line 3, left side), why does it seem like a trooper is getting ready to kill one person (left trooper) and then suddenly shooting an unsuspecting watcher? What have we seen troopers shooting someone that was expected to be shot before? Oh that's right, the entire set of scientists.

Bria: Um... she gave me the crystal, and then... she died.
{flashback, showing Bria's mother dead in the grass, and young Bria looking on sadly}
GM: She died?
GM: Okay, yes. Krennic had your mother killed.
{end flashback}
Bria: I remember now! That was the last time I ever saw her!
{flashback to about 15 seconds earlier}
Krennic: Kill her!
[SFX]: Pow! {a trooper shoots Bria's mother; young Bria looks on with shock}
{end flashback}
K-2SO: So now you have a reason to fight against Krennic!
Bria: Yeah! It's always been my mission to avenge my mother's death!
Bria: Everything I've done makes so much more sense now!
