Graphic descriptions of the battle wounds inflicted by roleplaying combat can add to the realism and grit of your adventures.
Or they can turn players off. Check how gritty they like it first and dial up the abstraction level if necessary. Particularly important if they're playing vampires and you have practical medical training.

Luke: I wave the sword as far away from my face as possible. 17.
[SFX]: Whooom!
GM: Your sword encounters virtually no resistance as you swing desperately. The wampa's arm thuds to the ice at your feet.
[SFX]: Slice!
Luke: Whoa, this sword is psycho! There's no way I'm ever using it again.
[SFX]: Waaaggh!
GM: The wampa cowers in well-justified fear of your weapon.
Luke: I'm outta here!
GM: Into the snow?
Luke: No... into the comfortable bar on the other side of the cave.
{struggles out into snow}
Luke: I'll order a vodka martini. {collapses}
[SFX]: paff
