Episode 1687: I Dream of Genealogy

If you've planned your adventure so that the heroes will need something critical later on, make sure they have some way of obtaining it before they realise it's needed. This is more of a fairness thing than anything else.

You want to be just fair enough that the players will kick themselves for not understanding how important that trivial seeming item earlier in the adventure was, rather than kick you for making it seem too trivial to be important.

[Reminder: Our guest commentators have not seen Rogue One. Part of the fun is seeing how their untainted impressions re-interpret the movie through the lens of our comic.]

I'm trying to figure out: Has Jim managed to turn his brain off, or is he roleplaying someone who'se brain is off?

... and, I think I'll leave that typo in, it just fits somehow. :-)

We have more evidence of... Well, I can't just assume this is Imperial stupidity, it could just be bad password management.

The computer is letting someone reset their password without any independent verification of who you are - no email/phone text, or any other secondary channel through a mechanism the password authority controls to talk to the password changer. That's 5-10 years out of date today.

And there are still systems doing this now.

Sciri: Have you forgotten your password?
Bria: No! I just can't remember it right now.
Sciri: Would you like to reset your password?
Bria: Oh. Yeah, good idea.
Sciri: Okay. I just need you to answer a few simple security questions. What's your mother's maiden name?
Bria: Mother's maiden name?? How the hell am I supposed to know that?
Bria: My mother was shot and my father abandoned me as a child, leaving me with nothing. Except this stupid data crystal.
Cassian: Let's just think this through, Galen.
Bria: Who? Oh! You want my grandmother's maiden name! Well that's even worse!
Cassian: What's on your data crystal again?
Bria: Just useless boring stuff like family history.
